Multiple Intelligent MeMe

It always amazes me how many e-mails I receive after posting something about Howard Gardner's Eight Multiple Intelligences.

For those of you who requested lesson plans, they are in the mail. Thanks for your interest.

Since it is only fair that I should have to post this tag in addition to all those poor souls who were hit with it, here is my rendition of a:

Multiple Intelligent MeMe

Logical-Mathmatical: (drawing conclusions - There are four kinds of people in this world: Those who can count, those who can't, and those who make lists...

Musical Rhythmical: (listening to music - one of my favorite songs)

Bodily-Kinesthetic: (playing football)

Visual-Spatial:(watching TV - my  uncle and I watched this for 30 minutes the first day we had a TV)
It is an example of my not-so-spatial intelligence...It is crooked:

Intrapersonal: (thinking about my relationship...the differences in men and women - below are two drawings of brains - can you guess which is who?)

Interpersonal: (entertaining)

Naturalist: (growing things)

Verbal Linguistic: (creating lesson plans for writing class)

When I was in the classroom, we had a Dead Word List. These were words that students could not use in their writing. The purpose was to use other vocabulary words that were more descriptive and exciting. Words that would add flavor to their writings.

Got was one of the words on the Dead Word List.

Here is an activity that you can share with your kiddos OR just have some fun with yourself.

ASSIGNMENT:  Got is a Dead Word

Replace 'got' in the following sentences with other words that are more descriptive, exciting, and flavorful.

1. I got nervous before giving my speech to the class.

2. I got an award for being on time.

3. I got the chicken pox and I've got polka dots all over me.

4. I got to go to the restroom, now.
  (Middle schoolers say, "Igottagoresroom.")

5. I got an A in math.

6. I got Mom a birthday gift.

7. I got to go to the party.

8. I got home this morning.

9. I got red hair.

10. We got to get together.

11. I got a gift for my birthday.

12. I got to leave before noon.

OK, you creative people out there, "fix" these sentences. You gotta do it.

Think Tank Time

This time of year just does it to me. I miss being in the classroom. So today is another post straight out of my lesson plan book.

These pages were taken from a series of exercise booklets I compiled for my fourth-graders. They are based on the saying, "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day.  Teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime."  I loved challenging my kiddos with "Thinking Skills" and watching that light bulb go off.

Here are the directions for the following Think Tank Time exercises:

1. Sequence:  What Comes Next ?

2. Algebra: Find the values of x and y

3. Whoops: What Doesn't Belong ?

4. Analogies:  up is to down as hot is to _____

5. Number/Letter Puzzle:  88 # K on P  =   88 Keys on a Piano

6. Puns:  R E C E I V E R   =  wide receiver  (notice how letters are arranged)

7. Missing letter: the same letter is missing from all 4 words

8. Visual: Draw what the words say to solve the problem

List Making 103

I.    I am a list-maker.

      A.  I cannot function without a list.

II. There are rules for list-making.

     A. if task is accomplished and not on list, add it to list, then mark it off

      B. task may not be marked off list unless accomplished

        1. when writing a new list, anything not accomplished on old list must be carried over

     C. it must be a vertical not a horizontal list (outline form preferred)

     D. lists must be judiciously updated daily

     E. no one can augment my list

     F. I can make a list for you. You can make a list for me.

         2. addendum forthcoming with separate rules for 'F'

     H. lists may be plagiarized

III. There are many list categories. 6 of which are:

       A. daily, weekly,  monthly, yearly

       B. shopping

       C. traveling

       D. children - not having had list, daughters might still be waiting at school to be picked up

       E. birthday, anniversary, holidays (sizes, favorites, types of gifts, etc.)

       F. questions: Important things that I ask myself daily.

           1.. If I die before accomplishing everything on my list, to whom should I leave my list?

           2. Is there a difference between psychic and psychotic?

           3 . Does anal retentive have a hyphen?

           4.  Does obsessive compulsive have a hyphen?

          5.  What is html? (I know what it stands for) (Am I too old to learn it? ) ( Why should I?)

          6. Why did I have to take two classes of Algebra in high school? They caused much anguish.

               a. for me

                b. for my parents

           7. Do people remember all the times I have made a fool of myself? 

                a. Do they care?

       G. Quotes:  (Important things I contemplate daily)

             1.  "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and only annoys the pig."

             2.  "Never miss an opportunity in life to Shut Up."

             3.  "No matter how flat you make a pancake, there are always two sides."

             4.  "If you can't make a mastake, you can't make anything. "

This is a "Honey-Do" list that I left for Hans before I left on a 10-day trip to Oklahoma. Please notice how seriously he takes my lists. Hopefully, his handwritten comments are plain enough to read.
