The previous few posts have concerned the tragedy of human trafficking, mostly on the Ivory Coast of Africa with young children being used to harvest cocoa beans. They are not fed nutritious meals, given the opportunity to go to school, and usually not even paid ! Not to mention they are beaten if they work too slowly.
The number of e-mails I've received and some of the comments on Facebook have certainly been a motivation for me to continue my own research into the products that I buy. Hopefully, it has sparked your curiosity so that you also delve into this information.
For instance, toilet paper !
Products are listed on the left side bar.
Now, I'm interested in finding out why "Quilted Northern" received an "F."
Another 'a-ha' moment for me what this :
Wow ! Who knew ? Did you look at this list ? I almost blew Perrier out my nose when I saw it listed here ! Well, shucks. I'll be looking for a different water on my next trip to the grocery store and it won't be San Pelligrino . . . Nestle owns that one, too.
NESTLE (This is an interesting article.)
Speaking of Wow . . . and Who knew ? Wrap your head around this one:
L'Oréal is a listed company, but the founder's daughter Liliane Bettencourt and the Swiss food company Nestlé each control over a quarter of the shares and voting rights.
And all that above isn't even the post for today.
This is:
Whether it is trafficking for child labor in harvesting cocoa beans or trafficking for sex, it seems to be a subject that many believe only happens in other countries.
That the trafficking in children for sex was once thought to be a problem beyond America's borders. But the FBI and the Justice Department have now started focusing intently on the issue--and what they've found is shocking. Thousands of young girls and boys are falling victim to violent pimps, who move them from state to state, which makes it a federal matter. The younger they are, the more they're worth on the street.
Trafficking is not smuggling. There are several important differences between trafficking and smuggling. Trafficking need not entail the physical movement of a person (but must entail the exploitation of the person for labor or commercial sex).
In 2009 the State Department reported that the United States is now the #1 destination for child sex trafficking in the world.
America’s underground sex trade is considered a $3 billion industry.

heartbreaking--but something that we all need to learn more about...love that teacher side of you, how you can have such fun experimenting with cupcakes, but also how you can help us all learn about serious issues like these.
